Over the past month, our teams have been actively supporting local communities, creating social, economic, and environmental value in the areas where we work.
Take a look below to see some of the exciting community projects our teams have been involved in!
Our SDF team working on the A1 Wentbridge, recently joined forces with National Highways in their latest anti-littering campaign, supporting an inspiring collaboration with artist James Owen Thomas. James created a one-of-a-kind piece using litter collected from roadsides along the A1 in Wentbridge, which aims to highlight the environmental impact and disruption caused by littering on our roads.
Our team played a key role by assisting James on site during a road closure, so that he could collect litter for the project, which he transformed into a creative visual reminder of the importance of responsible waste disposal. The artwork was unveiled on Wednesday 16 October, at Highways UK in Birmingham, coinciding with Recycle Week—a nationwide celebration aimed at inspiring the public to recycle more of the right things, more often.
In further support of the project, our SDF team donated £150 to “Prickly Pigs,” a hedgehog rescue charity close to James, in honour of his impactful and brilliant work.
In support of our commitment to create a cleaner and greener environment, our team working at Lyneham Banks B4069, alongside our supply chain partner, Pennys Group spent two days at Lyneham Banks Primary school carrying out tree surgery and clearing the school’s outdoor area.
The school follows the Wild Passport curriculum which supports the progression of knowledge and skills across distinct skill areas. On the grounds of the school they have a dedicated Forest School space which includes a roundhouse and bug hotels, helping children learn about nature and outdoor learning skills such as survival skills and light fires.
Our team cut back the overgrowth from the summer months, in preparation for the autumn and winter months, providing a safer space for the children to learn in.
Our team working on the March Regeneration Project hosted a friendly, inter-Eastern Highways Alliance (EHA) football match to raise much needed funds for the local community. This was a rematch of a previous event held eight months ago.
The event brought together a team of Octavius’ finest against our colleagues from Taylor Woodrow, our supply partners.
Held at the March Town Football Club, the thrilling spectacle, ended in the Octavius team winning 3-1. Spectators also enjoyed a live raffle along with a wide range of fantastic raffle prizes.
Thanks to the outstanding effort and support from all involved, the team raised an impressive £1,340 for March Town FC Juniors, helping provide invaluable resources and opportunities for young athletes in the area.
Our Rail team working within the Wales and Western Framework donated 107 children’s books to Greenmeadow Primary School in Swindon. The books were collected by the team in support of The Children’s Book Project.
The school’s headteacher, Ms. Mackinnon, expressed deep gratitude for the donation, highlighting how the books will bring an abundance of joy and learning to the children.
Thank you to everyone involved for giving up your time to important causes. By working together we can create a lasting positive legacy we can all be proud of.
At Octavius, everyone is entitled to one community day per year and unlimited project led volunteering to support our business objective of leaving a positive and lasting sustainable legacy.
